Best Way To Get Rid Of Silver Fillings

How To Get Rid Of Silver Fillings?

The medical term for “silver fillings” is dental amalgams. Today, we will explore what a dental amalgam is and how to best get them removed safely. While they are no longer used as a method

What Are Dental Amalgams?

A dental amalgam is commonly called a “silver-filling” due to its appearance. It is a mixture of mercury, silver, copper, tin and zinc used to fill cavities in teeth. Dental amalgams are approximately half (50%) mercury by weight.

Are Dental Amalgams Safe? Should I Be Concerned?

Dental amalgam fillings may release small amounts of mercury in the form of a vapor (gas) over time. The amount depends on how many you have and the age of the existing fillings. In addition, actions such as chewing gum and teeth grinding may factor into any mercury vapor being released. At the time that a new amalgam filling is placed or an old filling is removed, patients and healthcare providers may experience a temporary increase in exposure to mercury vapor. On one hand, there are no known health risks associated with ingestion (swallowing) small particles of dental amalgam. On the other hand, inhaling or breathing in mercury vapors may be harmful for certain patients.

Generally, those with multiple amalgam fillings might have slightly higher mercury levels in their blood or urine. These levels typically remain a level that is considered safe. Studies that have been conducted on people with dental amalgam do not show conclusive evidence that dental amalgam causes harmful health effects across the general population.

Should My Silver Fillings Be Removed?

This question is asked often by patients who have older amalgam fillings due to concerns about exposure to mercury. If your filling is in good condition and your dentist or health care professional says there is no decay beneath the filling, removal of your amalgam filling is not recommended. Removing intact amalgam fillings may result in unnecessary loss of healthy tooth structure. In addition, it could temporarily expose you to an increase in mercury vapor that is released during the removal process. Intact amalgam fillings in anyone, including those of greater risk such as pregnant or nursing mothers and children, should not be removed for the unless it is considered medically necessary by a health care professional. The best thing to do is discuss the need for removal and replacement with your dentist or physician.
