Bakersfield Dentist - How Often Should I Visit The Dentist

How Often Should I Visit The Dentist?

With a new year coming up, this is the time of year many of our patients are planning ahead if they haven’t already scheduled their follow up routine dental check-up appointments. Some people wait until there is a problem or tooth pain before they see the dentist. There could be many reasons depending on one’s situation, such as anxiety, time, or even insurance or financial concerns. While this is understandable, it is not recommended as getting treated when there is a problem is often more expensive and could involve more time. Instead, we recommend to all of our patients that they schedule a dental exam at least once every six months, even if they are not experiencing any discomfort or pain. This is for two main reasons: 1) dental cleanings are painless and can help support your oral health routine; and 2) having a dentist check on your teeth a few times per year can identify minor issues that can be addressed before they become a problem.

How Many Routine Check-Ups Does Dental Insurance Pay For Each Year?

Most dental insurance plans cover a minimum of two preventive visits per year at 100%. So most patients like to take advantage of that and schedule their routine preventative dental cleaning and check-up once every 6 months. This coverage for preventive dental care expenses is one of the reasons why dental insurance is worth it. Most dental patients typically make up for the cost of the premiums just by going to your preventive care appointments.

What Is Preventative Dental Care?

Preventive dental care is a combination of the daily care you do at home on your own, such as brushing and flossing your teeth, eating healthy, and scheduling regular dental checkups.

A regular dental checkup typically includes:

1. A teeth cleaning by a dental hygienist. A dental hygienist is a licensed healthcare professional who works closely with our dentists at Riar Dental Arts.

2. An exam by one of our board certified dentists.

How Will Preventative Dental Care Help My Overall Health?

Studies show that oral health is closely connected to your overall health. For example, gum disease has a correlation to diabetes, high blood pressure, and even stroke. This is one of the reasons why your dentist looks for signs of gum disease at each and every checkup. Any early signs can be communicated with you in coordination with your physician.

Dr. Riar will also check for signs of tooth decay (cavities), dry mouth, and oral cancer. All of these can affect your overall health and quality of life if they continue without proper treatment. If you keep you with your preventative dental exams, you will also be taking care of yourself overall.

People Notice Your Smile

One of the first things people always notice about you is your smile. Basic oral health care like brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist regularly keeps your teeth as clean and healthy as possible. This consciously and subconsciously support you with having the confidence to smile more often.
