What To Do About Unbearable Tooth Pain

What To Do About Unbearable Tooth Pain?

If you are experiencing unbearable tooth pain, this is a dental emergency. Call your dentist right away. While you might be able to manage some pain with over-the-counter pain relief medication, prolonged use can cause other health concerns such as liver damage and/or stomach ulcers. There are many other side effects depending on the underlying issue and one’s health situation.

What Are Some Things I Can Do At Home?

To bring some relief, a few things we suggest are:

1. Rinse with warm salt water
One of the easiest and quickest things you can do for tooth pain is to rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Salt has antiseptic properties that can help reduce inflammation and discomfort.

How To: Mix a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Gently swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. This natural remedy should help alleviate some discomfort and is suitable even if you are pregnant.

2. Cold compress
Another natural tip is to apply a cold compress. By applying cold, you can reduce the inflammation and pain.

How To: Place a cold compress or something cold such frozen bottle of water or ice cubes wrapped in a cloth against your cheek on the side of your face where you’re having pain. Do this for 10 minutes, and remove the compress for 10 minutes. Alternate at this interval throughout the day to help alleviate the tooth pain.

3. Avoid acidic and/or sugary food and drinks
Completely avoid sugar, candy, coffee, citrus fruits or drinks. These can make the pain worse, especially if you have sensitivity to cold or hot temperature. Avoid acidic and/or sugary food and drinks until you can see your dentist. If the tooth pain is severe enough, you may want to avoid eating until you can see your dentist.

4. Take over-the-counter pain relievers
Finally, one of the things is you might not be able to get seen by your dentist right away, so you might be wondering, “How can I function or event get a good night’s rest with this unbearable tooth pain?” In this situation, if you are not at a health risk for taking over-the-counter pain relievers, you may consider trying ibuprofen or acetaminophen. This will provide temporarily relief until you can see your dentist. Always consult with your health care professional.

I’ve Tried Everything What Else Can I Do?

The absolute best thing you can do is see your dentist to help get rid of the pain. It will ensure that you are able to identify the root of the problem and make sure it doesn’t become an even more expensive problem to correct.
